viaCycle
How It Works
Overview
viaCycle’s flagship product is a technologically advanced “bike share in a box”: everything needed to set up seamless bicycle transportation. We provide access to rugged, urban bicycles with integrated electronic locks. The lock handles all administrative functions, transmitting the usage and location of each bicycle when needed, and constantly monitoring for maintenance needs or unauthorized use.
At viaCycle, we keep it simple. There’s no need for kiosks or specialized bike racks, so you don’t have to trek all over town to find an available bike, or an open spot to return a bike when you’re done. No complicated locking process, so you can treat a viaCycle just like your own bike. No fancy keypads or card readers, so we can keep costs down and provide the best solution for the lowest price. Just an easy, effective way to get around – call, unlock, and go.
The Lock
The viaCycle electronic lock is the core of our innovative sharing system. Each lock is contained in a compact, armored enclosure. A central control unit within the lock is connected to GPS and wireless communication modules, which provide connectivity to viaCycle’s central servers and software system. Once they register online, a rider can approach any bicycle with an installed lock and quickly reserve it by calling or texting and entering their user PIN and the clearly labeled bicycle ID number. The entire process involves a single step. You don’t need an iPhone or a smartphone; any mobile phone will work.
The Bike
Each viaCycle bicycle has been specifically designed for the rigors of bicycle sharing. Thick aluminum frames and durable tires reduce maintenance, fenders protect against inclement weather, and front and rear lights provide riders with visibility and safety after dark. A hub dynamo sends electricity to the viaCycle lock (don’t worry, it doesn’t steal your pedaling power). Some of our bikes even come with internally geared hubs, for increased durability and allowing you to shift while stopped. Finicky derailleurs are a thing of the past!
